Much like the field of special education, this text, too, has evolved over time. We believe the tone and the messaging have finally arrived at the place where this text has been heading over each previous iteration. When Special Education in Ontario Schools was first published, in 1987, the educational landscape was rife with possibilities and enthusiasm but nascent in its structural and philosophical approaches. As with many endeavours in education, with advances in knowledge, research, and thinking, and, not surprisingly, through trial and error, practice evolves. It is the system-wide evolution of this practice and thinking that is reflected in this new edition. We are now at a place where the “tweaking” of this text has become solid and the intent clear. In this, the eighth edition, the transition to a book that has at its heart adherence to an inclusive practice for students with diverse needs is complete. That does not mean that all content is changed.
