Much like the field of special education, this text, too, has evolved over time. We believe the tone and the messaging have finally arrived at the place where this text has been heading over each previous iteration. When Special Education in Ontario Schools was first published, in 1987, the educational landscape was rife with possibilities and enthusiasm but nascent in its structural and philosophical approaches. As with many endeavours in education, with advances in knowledge, research, and thinking, and, not surprisingly, through trial and error, practice evolves. It is the system-wide evolution of this practice and thinking that is reflected in this new edition. We are now at a place where the “tweaking” of this text has become solid and the intent clear. In this, the eighth edition, the transition to a book that has at its heart adherence to an inclusive practice for students with diverse needs is complete. That does not mean that all content is changed. The fundamental notion remains that special education is built on the understanding that it is possible to respond to the strengths and needs of every student with an exceptionality; this continues to be at the core of what we do in our schools every day.

Effective classroom teachers act in loco parentis to ensure that students learn in safe and supportive school environments. A broad knowledge of education law helps new teachers understand their rights and responsibilities. The study of education law, however, should involve more than an understanding
of “do’s and don’ts” and correct procedures. It should address issues at the very heart of teaching as a profession grounded in an ethic of caring. Our aim is to capture the reader’s interest by linking education law and professionalism to the central concerns of classroom teachers. It is also important that new and experienced teachers understand that the educational landscape has changed: educators are being held to a higher standard, and disciplinary procedures are becoming more and more transparent.
